Noreen Golfman is the new President of the Canadian Association of Graduate Studies. The Dean of Graduate Studies and Professor of Film and English at Memorial University of Newfoundland begins her duties November 6, 2012. She has been serving as CAGS Vice-President and was previously “Graduate education is a global issue,” says Golfman. “It is critical to Canada’s future productivity and our international reputation. The number of jobs for those with graduate degrees grew from 600,000 to more than 1.3 million between 1990 and 2009 and that trend continues.
Investment in graduate education is a good strategy for governments, business and individuals. It impacts everything from telecommunications to health care, policy development in the public and private sectors, the agri-food sector and energy – as well as education.”
